Experimental Film

After being enrolled in an Experimental Film course in Fall 2020, I had the space to create experimental art films with a multitude of different concepts and topics.

Memories of Home, 2020

Memories of Home is a culmination of childhood home videos and imagined reenactments focused on reflection. While working through a personal project of digitizing home videos, this film came about through questioning what truly can be remembered as a child and how identity is shaped from childhood, for better or worse. This film also seeks to make links between recorded images and how memory functions. Utilizing the same camcorder that filmed me as a child, I moved from a subject to an active participant, retracing activities or visuals from childhood as a voyeur. Narration throughout the film works to immerse the viewer in a landscape of memory that connects the present to the past. Through visual and textual clues, Memories of Home investigates how technology mediates the construction of family and personhood.

Shot on a digital camera, this short film focuses on self image and how perception warps it.  Using a mirror, the reflection is used to represent how distorted innermost thinking can get.

Untitled, 2020

It's a common stereotype that Black women are impossibly strong, and often we are forced to filter our emotional reactions to fit into what is respectable and comfortable for others. This film shot on a digital camera works to break up that expectation in this untitled film by displaying colorful reenactments and representations of the feelings we often aren't allowed to express. Drawing from an array of appropriated audio clips from films that include Black women, their voices are lifted up and put on the forefront, guiding the film from conversation, to argument, to confession, and expressing what they feel without restraint. This film brings together color, emotion and drama into a landscape that serves as a metaphor for the experience of Black women.
